Dar Extravagantemente

Such extravagance
when there was need
giving so much
pouring out the ointment
anointing the master
preparing him
for what was to come

Giving so much
all he was for us
going to the cross
that we would live again
staying true to his calling
following the calling
faithful to the end

Our Stones

Our sins, our stones
the load which we carry
walking in the world
following its ways

If we would set down
let go of our nature
turning, repenting,
coming to God
what we would be freed of

No longer carrying
set free from our history
our sins washed away
with the blood of the lamb

Our way made easier
the load we carry lighter
following in the way of the Lord
a promise of paradise

Preenchendo toda a casa

The expensive perfume
the rich, sweet nard
filling all the house
the air thick with the coming
the days slipping away
Christ facing death

Giving extravagantly
the woman and our savior
each offering their best
in service to our master

God watching
forgiving us of our sin
in the sacrifice of the humble lamb
our Lord going to the cross for us

Walking Slowly

Following his footsteps
mindful, each one important
slowly going with our savior
all the days of this week

Hearing the crowds on Sunday
hosannas to the king
healing in Jerusalem
along the dusty streets

Watching him in the temple
clearing the house of God
the whispers in the corners of power
seeing the storm clouds rising

His hands in the water
washing the disciples’ feet
offering the new words at Passover
his body and his blood

Betrayal and denial
the false trial in the night
going before the righteous
convicted for accepting his name

Into the courtyard
standing before Rome
scourged and crucified
placed in the stone cold tomb

Walking slowly
only then to be ready
the joy of the morning
his resurrection
victory for the long dark night

anointing our savior

washed with her tears
her hair caressing his skin
a gift worthy for the king
offering our best to God

Close to My Savior

Almost hearing his breathing
the weight of his body beside me
what I truly feel yoked to him
doing the master’s work

The way made easy
my load truly being lifted
walking with my savior
I see his holy light

His Death and Resurrection

Only by his dying
by giving himself over
only in Christ’s sacrifice
could we all be redeemed

No other one able
save for Christ himself
fully righteous before the Lord
unblemished, a servant of God

He alone worthy
wholly divine yet fully man
becoming the lamb, the sacrifice
an offering to God
that our sins would be washed away

In his resurrection
defeating the sting, the stain
the permanency of death
that we may live again

As He Passed By

As he passed by me
all of us joyful
jockeying for position
as the palms waved
shouting hosanna
to the king

Christ entering Jerusalem
hot and dusty
the cloaks and branches falling
carpeting the road
softening his steps

Joy that afternoon
before the Passover
hope we would free us
once more that our chains
would be loosened
that our people would be free

Seeing Christ, the Messiah

In his humbleness
his kingship
in servanthood
his greatness, his love
in his healing, preaching
his fulfillment, all law and prophets

All of the signs
the words, the lessons
seeing Christ
in this man
from Nazareth

The righteous branch
from the root of Jesse
the son of David
ready to reclaim
his eternal throne

Choosing Christ

In his own agony
judged for his sin
choosing Christ
seeking redemption
there on the cross
his life turned around

Even then, Christ able
forgiving his of sin
offering him paradise
boundless mercy
abundant grace
in God’s holy name

Bound to Our Cross

Like the two criminals
crucified with Christ
bound to our cross
all of us choosing
which path to take

Following the world
reward here on earth
or following the Christ
the model of his servanthood
not a reward in the world
but glory in paradise

The Seed Bursting Forth

Up from the ground
unable to hold him
the seed bursting into the light
on that Easter morning

Unable to contain the Christ
the seed alive, reborn
death no longer controlling him
a wonder to behold

Joy in the harvest
the sacrifice of the seed
dying that we may live
to walk with God again

Many Seeds

Each of us from the wheat
from the vine
the dying of that Friday
the rising of the coming plant
the joy of Easter morn

Many seeds germinating
rising from the earth
each of us carrying a kernel
within our hearts
in him we have rebirth

The Germination of the Seed

The joy of Easter morning
so differently revealing
the light of the Lord
shining upon the grave

Christ, the germinated seed
the wheat that was cut down
the life that lives within us still
the hope of all who believe

We are the seedlings,
the children of the vine
the harvest for the Lord
our work, his kingdom come

Grain Dying

The crucifixion
the dying of our Lord
seen differently
in the words of the harvest

Grain dying,
cut down
by the reaper’s blade
placed in the earth,
to spring forth,
new life, rebirth

Not tears in the Garden

Not so much tears in the garden
the resolve, the awareness
coming for this, for the cross
a sacrifice to God

Coming for this time
to reconcile us to the father
to give his life for us
a harvest of the good grain
offered to God

Falling to the ground

The wheat cut down
the swords, the reaper’s cut
nailed to a cross,
a rough threshing floor

Falling to the ground
the seed buried in the earth
dark in the cave
waiting to give us new birth

In the light, up from the ground
the Christ rose in victory
a vine, growing in the ground
a harvest of souls for thee

Knowing I would suffer

The words of the Christ
that night of the Passover
choosing the way of sacrifice
that others would know the Lord

All in God’s purpose
the suffering he was aware of
come to the earth
for the night, the day
this humbling time

The wheat must be cut
the sacrifice made
the seed planted in the ground
that we may live again

Only in the dying
fulfilling his earthly purpose
to be a seed of hope
germinating with new life

Ready for the Reaper

Unlike the others
the telling of this night
Christ aware, ready
for the harvest
ready for the reaper
that the seed would bring new life

Only in the dying
in the journey in the ground
the rest of God’s purpose
to be revealed
not in his dying
but in the rising of the seed
that blessed morning
bursting with new life

For This Time

All of his life
for this moment
while praying in the garden
but choosing to sacrifice
conscious of his purpose
that we may be a harvest
redeemed seeds
growing for the Lord

Dying and buried
the seed of the Christ-child
in the ground of Friday
but ready for Sunday
the living savior
up from the grave
he arose
that we may have new life

For This

This week, the culmination
the seed prepared, the ground ready
the wheat cut,
the seed falling
buried in the ground
ready to burst into life

For this
he came
that we would hear him
that our faith would grow
as we saw the love of God

Dying that we
no more would be mired here
walking in the clay
all of our days

Ripe, ready for the harvest
the seed dying
that we would burst forth
a harvest for the Lord

So we could follow

the story of his life
his descending to death
taking on the form of man
becoming human flesh

faithful to the father
to his heavenly plan
going throughout the lad
preaching the good news to man

though he knew what was to come
setting his eyes on Jerusalem
entering in with hosannas
his passion days away

entering the holy of holies
climbing the rugged cross
dying and rising again
so we could follow, as servants,
redeemed, children of God

freed of our sins
because of his life
his living and his dying
his rising from the grave
that we may live in glory

One final sacrifice

the one singular priest
pure, no need for sacrifice
entering the holy of holies
where few may enter in

going the way of Aaron
entering into the center
a sacrifice like no other
the lamb giving himself

prayers to the father
God choosing to die
climbing the altar of the cross
that we no more may die

one final sacrifice
once and for all time
one pure offering of love,
complete, sublime

Entering the holy of holies

up to Calvary
the stone, the skull
the altar of the cross
the priest alone sacrificing
his own blood for all

that we would be free
let loose of the sin
that we carried
the priest taking it on for all time
once and for all to save

Assurance

What peace, sublime,
washing over him
fearing no more his dying
released of his sin

The second thief on the cross
hanging next to the Lord
hope in answer to his prayer
assurance of eternal life

The gift of a place in paradise
with our risen king
his through his faith in the Christ
redeemed by his loving word

Praying for Me

Praying that God
would forgive me
that his words
would have full weight
for I know not what I do
the damage my sin has done

Not wanting to be aware
blind to the pain
I have caused
hoping the words of Christ
his act of sacrifice on the cross
would wash away my stain

Praying for Us

Not just for those standing there
the prayer that our redeemer raised
his cry to the father from that cross
that God would forgive us
all of us, for sending the son
for our sin, for our rebellion
for we know not what we do

Praying for Them

Even in his agony
the depth of his grace
his love, his faith
truth of his sacrifice

Praying for them, for us
our blindness testified
calling for mercy
from the father
forgiveness for man
for we know not
what we do

More than the Law

Authentic Faith
more than the law
not bound by tradition
false piety of human rules
living out authentic faith
caring for the wounded man
robbed on the Jericho Road

Going above and beyond
just as we are called to do
showing love, compassion
reaching out to our neighbor
getting our hands dirty
even loving our enemies
out on the Jericho Road

harvesters of his bounty

caring for the fields

Service to the Master

Not focused on glory
on who would be
at his right and left
Service to the master
gathering the untamed colt
that prophecy would be fulfilled

Work of his ministry
each of us able to do our part
little things we can do
following our master
going where we are called
laying our cloaks on the ground
waving the palms in victory
singing our hosannas to the king

Mud on Their Cloaks

The mud on their cloaks
the dust of the road
laid down when they took them off
dropping them before the Lord
to soften the steps of the colt

Loud hosannas ringing
shouted into the air
the victory,
the Messiah come
entering the city to save

Softening His Steps

Under the feet of the colt,
carrying our savior
softening his steps,
entering in,
into the city of David

Loud hosannas
for the one, for him
coming in the name of the Lord
praise to the Messiah
on this his holy day

Spread on the Road

Their cloaks, the branches
laid down, spread on the road
ushering the king, into the holy city
heralding his entrance
coming in victory

Singing his praises
sweet hosannas, the Messiah come
branches in their hands
hosannas to the king

Singing Hosanna

Singing loud hosannas
joy in our hearts
not just the palms
the beginning of the week
and the sacrifice of the cross

Victory comes
singing loud hosannas, ever
triumphant over death
joy for his love
singing loud hosannas, ever
to our living,
our risen king

That Crowd

Five days after joy
Christ on the road
entering the city of David
loud hosannas on their lips

Changed dramatically
calling for his death
that crowd of a different sort
on that dark morning
when the curtain was ripped
when Christ died for our sin

Their Dirty Cloaks

Carrying their dirty cloaks
the mud, the dust of the road
after the procession
Christ in the city
hosannas to the king

A bit of the palms, of this morning
sitting on my wall
branches that they waved
reminders of the king
the joy they felt that day

Like Rose Petals

The procession,
the palms, the cloaks
spread on the road
like rose petals
laid down before the Lord
hosannas to the king
making the way smooth
the rough ways made even
preparing the way
hosannas to the king

Into Their Hands

The disciples, those who had followed
those who would lead the church
carrying on his ministry
spreading the good news to all

Into their hands
the hands of men
so began his passion
in victory, beginning and end

The disciples, not he alone
setting the king upon the colt
their cloaks his cushion
riding into Jerusalem

Rejecting the King

The humble carpenter
not riding in a chariot
walking, dust on his feet
journeying with the Lord

Rejecting the king
those in power
unwilling, unable to see
the Messiah here in their midst

Yet death not the end
fulfilling all foretold
rising from the grave
in final victory

The stone that was rejected
on him, the rock
the foundation
all our hopes restored
