an idea, a dream

the Independence of America,

a hope not yet realized,

a promise unfulfilled.

 

the words of mettle,

of hope, of aspiration

a hope not yet realized,

our history subordinated.

 

enslaved people,

many nations subjugated,

a hope not yet realized,

at the time of our Independence.

 

truth telling, a fair reading,

the long march continues,

a hope not yet realized,

our history transformed.

 

a clear-eyed reading

of the words, their promise,

a hope not yet realized,

so many tomorrows.
