hearing the scratch of the leaves,
the branches, the acorns,

Summer on the Vineyard.
 
Nowhere else to be
A cup of black coffee
On the deck or on the bed
Staring into the branches

as I walk the beach near twilight
sneaking out for a few minutes,
precious, but too few by far.
 
Stealing time that wasn't mine
staying in that place too briefly
longing for that moment to have lasted,

Sometimes land, sometimes water - v3

Mud flats, tidal marshes
below the bridge, the roadway,
my path, the way to work and home,
watching the daily changes,
the urgent ebb and flow.
 
Sometimes land, sometimes water,
as I drive, as I journey, as I travel,
seeing the tidal forces, the estuary,
plants and creatures dwelling
between water and land.
 
Silt and flooding, changing,
as I look, as I ponder, as I sojourn,
drinking in the vista, the primordial soup,
watching the tidal motion,
the urgent ebb and flow.

Approaching the mall

Crossing the parking lot,
coming right toward me
approaching the mall,
But following their passions.
 
He broke to the left,
she went to the right behind me;
He went to the bait shop,
She entered the Dollar General.
 
Soon he was finished,
now walking before me,
entering the Dollar General
joining his wife on her shopping trip.

Sometimes land, sometimes water

The mud flats, the tidal marshes
below the bridge, the roadway,
my path, the way to work and home
watching the daily changes,
the urgent ebb and flow.
 
Sometimes land, sometimes water,
as I drive, as I journey, as I travel,
seeing the tidal forces, the estuary,
the plants and creatures dwelling
between water and land.

The tide coming in,
light behind me fading,
standing in the water
a half hour past sunset.
 
Alone with my thoughts,
sand moving beneath me,
bleeding stress off me
into healing waters.

An Amazon rainforest denuded
the woods down the road
an empty lot now clear cut
a landscape convulsing in pain.
